We have always operated with an environmentally responsible attitude. We have been reviewed by a third party auditor who has audited our facility and we are Chain of Custody (CoC) Certified with Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®), Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®), and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification™ (PEFC™). These organizations focus on the CoC process, which documents the entire path taken by a tree from the forest to the mill, to the printer, and to the end-user consumer.
The decision to “go green” was an easy one, because it was something asked of us by our customers. Michael Martin, owner of Printing Concepts, Inc., mentions that,“A customer came to us and said they wanted to be able to use Chain-of-Custody certified materials in their printed communication products. It was important to them and that made it important to us. We conducted some initial research and the more we learned, the more we knew that this was more than a simple investment we were going to make in order to be able to meet the requirements of a single customer. It would be an important step for Printing Concepts and could be an important tool for all our customers, many of whom operate educational and medical institutions, companies and organizations already focused on maintaining environmentally responsible practices.”
We are a Green Printer
As part of the recycling program installed at Printing Concepts, all of our paper scraps and cutoff materials are bound, compacted, picked up and recycled locally. The paper and other products are then converted into usable products.
In addition, all our aluminum plating materials and plastics are collected, separated, and picked up by local recycling facilities. We also recycle cans and plastics from our work area, keeping the entire company green.
Environmentally Safe Inks
Current printing regulations require that petroleum inks release 30 percent volatile organic compounds (VOC) or less. To move towards a more environmentally friendly initiative, we have adopted vegetable-based inks. These inks are formulated for 2 to 15 percent VOC, far less than the 30% from petroleum bases. Vegetable-based inks are made of a mixture of renewable resources, such as soy, flax, canola or safflower, with the oil from each plant giving the ink its own unique advantage.
Our inks include the lowest amount of VOC content and are composed of renewable raw vegetable materials. The inks that we use are environmentally safe and mostly contain organic pigments with resins and vegetable oil compounds.
